A year ago, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally took place despite the pandemic, despite health warnings, despite common sense, despite everything.
The rally led to about 266,000 cases of Covid and cost about $12.2 billion in public health dollars, according to the IZA Institute of Labor Economics.
South Dakota governor Kristi Noem, a Republican, scoffs at the analysis like a true Trump trooper. She says it's "fiction" and an "attack" on the personal freedom of red-blooded, soon-to-be-hacking-and-dying American patriots.
Meanwhile, Dr. Anthony Fauci is "very concerned."
So are we. But who can get hundreds of thousands of bikers to listen when they're out to relive their adolescent rebellion?
