It doesn't take much to see why Ted Cruz is one of the most disliked characters in Congress.
Take the Cleveland Guardians. You've probably heard that the Cleveland major league baseball team, formerly known as the Indians, finally stopped tap dancing around how the name "Cleveland Indians" just might be a tad offensive, and changed it to the Cleveland Guardians. That's the nickname for four figures built into a bridge near the stadium.
This week, Ted Cruz licked one of his fingers, stuck it into the wind, and figured he could use the news to pander to his base. On Friday, he tweeted, "Why does MLB [Major League Baseball] hate Indians?"
We know that Cruz has no sense of the appropriate, if only because of his trip to Cancun this February. While 200 Texans were in the process of freezing and dying in a freak cold snap, the Senator packed his bags and decamped to Mexico. He later blamed his daughters for persuading him to go.
Still, we're pretty confident that Cruz knows all about the Guardian name change. Heck, he probably knows all the managers personally. For all we know, he's got season tickets to a skybox. His tweet fooled nobody.
But if there's one thing Cruz has learned in Congress, it's how to put a thumb in the eye of his opponents. And he knows that it's enough to make his barrel-bottom base love him.
