In an Olympics marred by gauche observations on female athlete's clothes, Germany's gymnasts have decided to wear modest unitards that go from neck to wrists to ankles instead of the bikini-cut leotards that most other gymnasts are wearing.
“We sat together today and said, OK, we want to have a big competition,” said gymnast Sarah Voss of Germany. “We want to feel amazing, we want to show everyone that we look amazing.” Voss said that "gymnastic customs" should evolve as competitors age, prompting one news report to note that "German gymnastics teams include several athletes who are older."
Really!
But it seems that misogynistic statements are just part of the mix at the Tokyo Olympics. From the official who told a Paralympics athlete that her shorts were too short to the official who fined the women's Norwegian beach handball team (Norway?!) for wearing shorts instead of bikini bottoms, the Olympics officials have given women competitors whiplash with inconsistent demands.
The German team wore the same unitards in the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships in April.
