Political cartoonists need an iron skin to live with viewer criticism. But when Bill Bramhall tweeted a cartoon about Andrew Yang to the NY Daily News Twitter account, he probably wasn't expecting to be called out by Yang's furious wife.
"I can’t believe my eyes," Evelyn Yang said on Monday, according to The Hill. "To publish this racist disfiguration of @AndrewYang as a tourist, in NYC where I was born, where Andrew has lived for 25 years, where our boys were born, where 16% of us are Asian and [when] anti-Asian hate is up 900%."
It seems that Bamhill had to tone down the epicanthic fold of Yang's eyes before the cartoon went into print. The result, according to Yang’s wife, insults Yang's racial identity and his status as a real New Yorker. The cartoon shows Yang coming up from a Times Square subway station, acting a tad giddy, and maybe like a simpleton. A shop owner nearby says happily, "The tourists are back!"
The point is that the cartoonist thinks Yang seems oblivious to a lot of what matters to New Yorkers. He hasn't voted in a city election in 20 years. He has made a few bone-headed remarks and shown gaps in his knowledge of its laws.
The cartoon in question is in the link in Evelyn Yang's tweet in the article below. (There are two cartoons: Bramhall's is on the right. On the left is a cartoon NOT published recently.)
But a "racist disfiguration?" What do you think? If Yang’s wife is offended, does that mean the cartoon is definitely racist?
