4/7/21 At this Virginia High School, Nobody's Woke

The Cave Spring Hornets, formerly Indians, have got the fight-and-conquer thing down solid. And guess what pic they find emblematic of such a sentiment? Officer Chauvin with his knee on George Floyd's neck!

Let's clarify: A high-school football player in Roanoke County, Virginia edited a photo of the crime so that Chauvin's face was obscured by the Cave Spring logo and Floyd's was hidden by the rival team's logo. It was the first time in 10 years that Cave Spring had bested the other school. A few kids shared the meme. Now the School Board is involved.
District spokesman Chuck Lionberger tried to smooth things over, noting that other photos celebrating the team’s win that were posted on social media were “not related to George Floyd,” but were “equally as deplorable.” Equally? Really? Did they show lynchings?
As commentator Joe Jurgis wrote in The Root, "White people. Why are you like this?," adding, "I know Virginia is racist as hell, but for real, though?"
The School Board will investigate -- doubtless hoping that if the query lasts long enough, nationwide media will forget the whole thing.
Nevertheless, there were immediate, if modest, consequences. Cave Spring has to forgo playing during the next game, which is the last game of the season. That will put a dent in Homecoming -- but really, only the kids will care. Whatever consequences the kids face, it'll still be too little, too late to haul them into the 21st century.
In another 30 years, they'll probably be living nearby, close to their parents, and still be thinking, "What's the big deal? It was just a meme!"
And on they'll slumber, like Rip Van Winkle.
