Blame it on pandemic isolation, remote schooling, lousy parenting, and that special form of underthinking that dogs 12-to-15 year olds, and you have a new fashion called carjacking.
So far, the crime is up 100% in Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, and Minneapolis. It's up 343% in Washington, DC.
If only they were merely borrowing an empty car for a joyride. But no: Grownups have gotten killed during these armed escapades. On March 23, Mohammad Anwar, a 66-year-old UberEats Uber driver in Washington, DC, fought two girls for control of his Accord after they tased him. The car overturned and Anwar died. The 13 year old and 15 year old girls are now charged with felony murder.
At that point in 2021, there'd been 101 carjackings in the capital city, versus 22 in 2020.
Police advise that people be aware of their surroundings. They do not mention the most obvious solution: You could drive an unattractive clunker that looks as though it'll break down 30 feet from the scene of the crime. Maybe a teen would notice that.
