They're easier to find now, but this crocheted Bernie's Mittens Doll, posted on eBay the day after the inauguration, brought $20,300 (with 167 bids) and local fame for its maker, Tobey King of Corpus Christi, Texas.
Every dime from Bernie's Mittens 1.0 went to Meals on Wheels, but since then, King has sold north of 30,000 Bernie's Mittens patterns.
It couldn't have happened at a better time for King and her family. Her husband had lost his job in Washington, DC; he's still there, looking for work, but King and their daughter have been living with her mother in Corpus Cristi. Now the family can be together again.
Earlier, King also had a hit with crocheted Ruth Bader Ginsberg dolls. She sold about 100.
