If you're in Texas, you need to protect yourself from the lack of effective government.
So it seems, based on a new analysis that counts almost 200 deaths -- not the official count of about 100, an appalling enough number on its own -- from the power failures during the deep freeze Texas experienced in February. In this exceptionally corrupt state full of sweetheart deals for the energy industry, the public energy authority cut corners and failed in preparation for this historically severe but not unprecedented freeze.
The blackouts were largely centered on Houston. Those failures led to at least 100 deaths from hypothermia, at least 22 from the failure of electrical medical equipment or an inability to travel for emergency care, and misjudgments by consumers too unfamiliar with cold to know how to keep themselves warm safely; at least 16 died of carbon monoxide poisoning. Sixteen deaths were from fires or vehicle accidents. Another 40 died from causes not yet listed. The investigations are ongoing.
While these people fought to live, ex-governor Rick Perry was quoted as saying that “Texans would [be willing to] be without electricity for longer than three days to keep the federal government out of their business.”
It's enough to make you feel sick.
