2/6/21 Capitol Riot's "Lady with a Bullhorn" is a Mother of Eight

Carrying a bullhorn and giving instructions to other insurrectionists, Rachel Powell, the lady with a pink hat, looked like a leader of the troops during the Capitol Hill riot on January 6.

At this point, it seems, she's not a troop leader at all. She's a single mom with 8 kids, living in backwoods Pennsylvania and making do with an income from a part-time job, yoga instruction, yogurt and goat-cheese sales, and vegetable gardening. She home-schools her kids. When she was arrested on Thursday, no one was more surprised than her neighbors.

Powell was born in Anaheim, California, and grew up in Fresno before the family moved to Pennsylvania to take care of an ailing relative. She married early and found her profession, motherhood, at 16. She and her husband separated three years ago.

She never had much in the way of political opinions until a few years ago, when she started posting on Facebook and slowly became indignant about the rules surrounding COVID19 and, then, about the 2020 election. Interviewed by The New Yorker, she claimed her trip to Washington, DC was "spontaneous," and that she used a bullhorn only to keep people from getting hurt.

Right up until the FBI arrested her Thursday night, following a raid on her home to collect evidence, the agency said she wasn't a suspect. Now, she has been arraigned on a mess of charges and will stay in custody at least until a hearing next Thursday.
