Texas Republicans Aim to Sweep the 2020 Darwin Awards

July 14, 2020

"Republicans in eight different Texas counties have now voted to censure Gov. Greg Abbott for his order requiring Texans to wear face coverings and take other protective measures as COVID-19 spreads throughout the state."

That is, some Republicans' faith in Donald Trump and Fox News is so deep that they're sure that COVID-19 is a hoax.

Another story from that day includes a video made by the chief medical officer of San Antonio Methodist Hospital about a 30-year-old patient who died after attending a "COVID-19 party." That's a party where the host is infected and invites people to come on over and help prove that the virus is no big deal.

“I think I made a mistake," the patient said. "I thought this was a hoax, but it’s not.”

For this particular type of death by misadventure, the Darwin Award candidates are not just from Texas. COVID-19 parties have been reported in Washington State, New York, and Alabama. In some cases, the reports were soon withdrawn.

"Some health experts and public officials have cast doubt on whether or to what extent these [parties] are taking place," the Chronicle notes. Apparently, health experts can't bring themselves to believe that anyone could be that stupid.

Is this fight against masks just one way that the Republican Party is destroying itself? Is the conservative distrust of mainstream media the main cause of this tragedy? Should relatives of dead COVID-19 partygoers sue the federal government for spreading false health information?
